When KilledByPolice.net was launched in 2013, reliable information on these deadly encounters was very hard to find. Today, several other initiatives have followed; such as, The Washington Post database, Mapping Police Violence and Fatal Encounters. America was founded on the principles of life, liberty, justice, and the rule of law. We support our law enforcement community, which plays an essential role in the safeguarding of those principles. Our goal is to improve transparency and accountability over how police officers exercise their essential right to use deadly force.
The top 5 states with the highest levels of police violence per one million residents are New Mexico, Oklahoma, Alaska, Arizona and Nevada. The state with the highest percentage of black people killed by law enforcement officers is Utah where you are 4.3x more likely to be killed by a police officer if you are African American.
